Both above and below the surface of our oceans, many unusual things exist that once were useful developments.  Take, for example, the sea forts commissioned by Great Britain to defend their coastline at various points in history. 

Most of them are rubble now, but one of them – HM Fort Roughs aka the Principality of Sealand -  is home to one of the most fascinating and complex stories ever told.

Since being decommissioned, many of these forts have gained strange second lives as everything from luxury resorts and private retreats to micronations and pirate radio stations.

SEALAND - A DESIGN CRITIQUE

The opportunity to design an entire country, is one that almost never ever happens.

That is, until Dutch designer Daniel van der Velden was commissioned to design money, passports and stamps for the independent micro-nation of The Principality of Sealand.

As disputed and controversial as this nation status may be, the project to conceive Sealand’s visual identity was not without complexity. Part and parcel to ‘The Sealand Identity Project’ and the uniqueness of this man-made, self-proclaimed nation, was the internet, as global archive.

WIND TURBINES REPLACE DIESEL GENERATORS ON SEALAND

Stratford-upon-Avon based FuturEnergy Ltd. has supplied cost-effective micro wind turbines that will replace diesel generators as the power source for the Principality of Sealand.

The two FuturEnergy micro wind turbines, each costing only £695, replace the diesel powered generator station damaged in the disastrous fire on the fort in 2006.
