In the year-long Sealand Anniversary Competition to celebrate Sealand’s 40th Anniversary as a sovereign micro-nation, the readers of Sealandnews.com have voted for the Dalai Lama to be awarded with an honorary noble title of the Principality of Sealand as a reward for his lifetime achievement.
This spells bad news for television personality Suzanne Shaw and ex-Sex Pistols manager Malcolm MacLaren, who were also nominated and who already lost out in their quest for a noble title to deceased soap star Mike Reid in this month’s ITV reality show ‘The Baron’, where they were unable to win the title ‘13th Baron of Gardenstown’.
The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet is the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people and his consistent opposition to violence was recognized in 1989 with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sealand is arguably the best-known of all micronations. The Principality of Sealand started out as the humble HM Fort Roughs during the second World War, built by the U.K. for defense against German aircrafts.
Sealand’s location is about 6 miles from the coast of Suffolk in international waters. At its peak, up to 300 military personnel lived on Fort Roughs; the last of them moved off the base in 1956.

If a small team of Silicon Valley millionaires get their way, in a few years, you could have a new option for global citizenship: A permanent, quasi-sovereign nation floating in international waters.
With a $500,000 donation from PayPal founder Peter Thiel, a Google engineer and a former Sun Microsystems programmer have launched ‘The Seasteading Institute’, an organization dedicated to creating experimental ocean communities with diverse social, political, and legal systems.
“Decades from now, those looking back at the start of the century will understand that Seasteading is an obvious step towards encouraging the development of more efficient, practical public-sector models around the world,” Peter Thiel said in a statement.
The institute plans to splash a prototype into the San Francisco Bay within the next 2 years, the first step toward establishing deep-water city-states, or what it calls “seasteads” - homesteads on the high seas.
