Inspired by Sealand and other micro-nations, a resident of the Shetland Islands has taken residence on the uninhabited island of Forewick Holm and declared himself independent from the U.K.

Stuart Hill, a 65-year old sailor and former resident of the Shetland Islands, has renamed the tiny island ‘Forvik’ as a reference to its Norwegian heritage and declared it a crown dependency like the Channels Islands.

Stuart hopes to encourage Shetland residents to declare themselves independent, challenging the claim to the island by the U.K. government . The Shetlands were pawned to Scotland by the Norwegian King Christian but never officially claimed by Scotland.

Hill has been living on Forvik for five years now and is selling one-meter plots of land and taking applications for citizenship. Like Sealand, Stuart wants Forvik to have its own currency, tax, stamps and flag.
